$1,000 reward offered in theft

PRESQUE ISLE – Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to a grand jury indictment in the case of a theft from a motel last month.

The Dec. 10 break-in at the Presque Isle Motel, formerly known as Hedrich’s Motel, has been targeted this month by the Aroostook County Crime Stoppers program.

Crime Stoppers is a law enforcement program that engages the public in helping police solve crimes. Individuals with information about the Crime of the Month can call police confidentially with tips.

According to Sgt. Shawn Van Tasel of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department, the crime at the Main Street business was first reported to the Presque Isle Police Department.

Sometime during the overnight hours of Dec. 10, someone broke into the room next to the office in the motel. There were no signs of forced entry.

After entering the office, the perpetrator made off with a safe that contained more than $550.

The safe needed to be opened with a key and combination, items that were taken from an unlocked desk in the office.

Van Tasel said the safe would have been “extremely awkward” to wrangle out of the office, since it weighed 100 to 200 pounds and was about 2 feet by 2 feet in size.

Anyone providing information this month that leads to a grand jury indictment on this crime is eligible for a $1,000 award. Crime Stoppers also will pay for information on other felony crimes.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call (800) 638-8477.
