BANGOR – Central Maine Power and Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. warned customers Thursday to be wary of telephone scams in which callers, claiming to be company representatives, demand bank account information or else have service shut off.
Customers from Corinth to Machias have reported that they received such calls over the past three days.
Legitimate representatives of both companies would have on hand information about the customer.
To be sure that a person on the phone is not a scammer, customers should ask the caller to verify their account number, account balance, account history and service address.
Maine State Police have been notified of the scams, the utilities said.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call should contact the local police or sheriff’s department.
Bangor Hydro and CMP urge any customers who recently disclosed bank account information over the phone to contact their bank to check recent transactions history.
