Baxter State Park officials held their opening day of reservations for the 2007 camping season on Monday.

In all, 70 campers made reservations in the park during the event, reserving less than 3 percent of the total spots available during the summer. More than 80 percent of the opening-day participants were Maine residents.

Baxter State Park’s regular rolling reservation program is now under way for other camping spots. For more information on the rolling reservation system and how to hike and camp in the park, check the park’s Web site at www.baxterstateparkauthority.com or call 723-5140.

L.L. Bean features fly tying

If you’re planning a trip to Maine’s premier outdoor outfitter in the near future, you may want to take advantage of a program designed for avid fly anglers.

L.L. Bean is holding an interactive fly-tying series throughout the winter, with sessions held each Friday night in the Techno-Hunt Room of the Hunting and Fishing Store. Classes begin at 7 p.m. and run through March 30.

Fly tiers are advised to bring their vise, tools and materials. For upcoming fly patterns and required materials, call 800-221-4221, Ext. 37720.

Young tiers conquered the wooly worm on Jan. 12 and the black ghost and bucktail streamer on Jan. 19.

This Friday youths age 10 to 15 will learn how to tie the bead-head wooly bugger.

After that, L.L. Bean will offer three weeks of beginner sessions, followed by three weeks of intermediate classes and five weeks of advanced tying.
