SUV stolen from downtown Bangor returned after joyride

A man’s SUV was stolen from downtown Bangor and taken for a joyride Friday night after the vehicle was left alone and running in front of the Maine Discovery Museum, according to officials.

The blue 1999 Chevrolet Blazer with the vanity license plate “GINNI” was left running at around 8:40 p.m. in front of the museum while its owner finished closing a nearby restaurant, according to police documents.

As of Sunday evening, the vehicle had been returned to the same area from which it was taken but had about an extra 75 miles on the odometer, according to police.

A 1998 Kia Sephia was stolen from 60 Parker St. in Brewer around 11:15 p.m. Friday but was found Saturday afternoon on an access road to a radio tower off Dirigo Drive. The keys had been left in the car when it was stolen, police said. Motor oil had been poured on the car, and one of the taillights was smashed. There are no suspects in the case.

A Bangor man who attempted to rob a downtown restaurant Friday night was arrested on a charge of Class A robbery.

Shawn Conary, 33, entered Chopsticks on 167 Center St. at around 10:20 p.m. and attempted to rob the restaurant using a weapon, according to Sgt. Bob Bishop of the Bangor Police Department. Approximately seven Bangor officers went to the scene, and the incident remains under investigation. Class A robbery is a felony.

Brownfield police in Oxford County stopped a vehicle Saturday night for having a license plate light out and discovered that the driver had stolen a Sony PSP, four PSP games and an iPod.

According to Brewer police, when Shane Smith, 19, of Bangor was stopped for his plate light around 9:45 p.m., he told the officer that “he knew why he was being stopped” and that “his aunt had made a theft complaint.”

Which, unbeknownst to him or Brownfield police, was being made at the same time as the stop.

Smith allegedly had taken a Sony PSP, four PSP games and an iPod from his aunt’s house on Chamberlain Street in Brewer. He was arrested and charged with theft and receiving stolen property.

Correction: A police beat item in Monday’s Final edition mistakenly reported the town and county of an arrest. The arrest took place in Brownville in Piscataquis County, not Brownfield in Oxford County.
