AUGUSTA – Oxford Hills of South Paris edged defending champion Mount Ararat of Topsham by 131/2 points to win the Eastern Maine Class A regional wrestling championship at Cony High School Saturday.
The Oxford Hills Vikings placed eight wrestlers in the championship finals and saw three of them win individual titles en route to 171.5 points.
Jack Pike, Tom Moulton and Ron Packard led the Vikings’ assault by winning the 171, 189 and 285-pound division crowns, respectively.
The Mount Ararat Eagles placed six in the championship finals with two winning.
Morse High of Bath had the best effort in the championship finals as all four of its wrestlers – D.J. Brackett at 103, Spencer Chipman at 130, Ben Schutt at 135, and Logan Russell at 140 – won titles.
Mt. Blue of Farmington also did well with Gary Theriault, Sam Webber and Gary Begin winning titles at 119, 125 and 145 pounds, respectively.
Other individual champions were Cony’s Peter Tracy at 112, Mount Ararat’s Ben Cox at 152 and Mike Golek at 160, and Dave Atchison from Erskine Academy in South China at 215.
Three Brewer wrestlers got into the consolation finals: Stephen Desjardins at 119, Travis Rideout at 160 and Matt Smith at 189, but none came out with wins. Desjardins lost an 18-12 decision to Skowhegan’s Troy Johnson, Rideout had to withdraw with a medical forfeit against T.J. Vallee of Cony and Smith was pinned in 4 minutes, 10 seconds by Skowhegan’s Scott Mitchell.
Other local standouts at the meet were Lawrence of Fairfield’s Ryan Chevert, who took third at 125, and Kyle Chretien, who won the 171 consolation final. Bryant Lorette of Skowhegan was third at 215.
