GREENVILLE – Wardens were called late Sunday night to search for an Old Town couple who called on a cellular telephone and reported they were stuck in the snow on a woods road in Greenville.

Joseph Young, 41, his wife, Carrie Young, 28, and their 9-month-old baby girl were located by wardens on the Katahdin Iron Works Road at about 9:45 p.m.

“This is just a classic case of bad decisions,” Warden Adam Gormely said. “They weren’t familiar with the road.” In addition, their small vehicle was not equipped for winter because the tires were bad, and they had marijuana in their possession.

Joseph Young was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, and his wife was charged with possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

The couple told police they had gone for a drive and were trying to make it back home in time for the Super Bowl, according to Gormely.

He said the Youngs had traveled on the K.I. Road for about 15 miles until they came to an unpaved section, he said. When they attempted to turn around, the vehicle became stuck in the snow.

They were unsure of their location but provided wardens with enough information to identify their general whereabouts, Gormely said.

The couple apparently became stuck in the snow at 4 p.m., Gormely said, but did not report their condition until 9 p.m. Three wardens searched from the Greenville end and two from the Brownville end before the family was located Sunday night.
