HERMON – A firefighter received Liberty Mutual’s Firemark Award on Monday night for her management of the town’s smoke detector program.
Lt. Kelli Leighton was recognized for the hours that she spent organizing the detector program, which made smoke detectors available to every Hermon home.
“A couple of years ago we were awarded the federal grant,” said Fire Chief Larry Willis. “We were a little behind schedule and I asked Kelli to take the primary responsibility for getting it done.”
Since the program began in 2005, the Fire Department has installed 5,445 smoke detectors in homes.
The department still has a few hundred detectors available for any residents, Willis said.
The Department of Homeland Security gave the department an $85,000 grant to support the program.
