Brewer school to host Step-Up-Day, Feb. 12

BREWER – Area eighth-graders interested in attending Brewer High School in the fall are invited to a Step-Up-Day for the Class of 2011 next week.

Activities will start at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, and run through 2:10 p.m.

Current Brewer High School students will be dismissed at 11:15 a.m. that day.

Parents are invited to a meeting at the high school from 6:30 to 8 that evening.

The high school’s new nonresident application process will be one of the items discussed, Superintendent Daniel Lee said Monday.

The incoming freshmen will be the first class that will have to abide by the policy, which went into effect Sept. 1.

The new policy requires all out-of-town students to fill out an application to attend Brewer High School, submit two years of academic, attendance and discipline records and provide a recommendation from their middle school principal or superintendent.

Home-schooled pupils and those who did not register at their middle schools are invited to the Step-Up-Day, but must register by calling the high school at 989-4140.

The Step-Up-Day’s events will start with a welcome in the gymnasium. A lunch will follow in the cafeteria with faculty and some current students. Those with dietary restrictions are encouraged to bring their own lunches.

After lunch, pupils will choose between three interactive presentations about various academic departments at the high school. An ice cream social will end the day, with pupils boarding buses at 2:10 p.m. to return to the middle schools they attend.

The parent information meeting at 6:30 p.m. will be an opportunity to tour the school, meet faculty and staff, learn about academic programs and extracurricular activities and to ask questions about the new admissions policy and how it will affect their children.
