Former Stanford University and pro basketball player Burton Nelson will be the featured speaker today as the University of Maine celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day and the 35th anniversary of the landmark Title IX legislation with several activities on the Orono campus.

Nelson will speak at 6 p.m. in the Maine Center for the Arts. The award-winning author and lecturer has written five books, including “We Are All Athletes Bringing Courage, Confidence and Peak Performance Into Our Everyday Lives.”

UMaine also hosts a noon women’s basketball game at Alfond Arena against Albany and is running a 10 a.m. program for middle school students, “Bears of Tomorrow,” in Memorial Gym.
