BANGOR – As the senior point guard for the Bangor High School boys basketball team, Troy Jellison typically doesn’t shoot a lot from the perimeter.
But if he didn’t feel the freedom to unleash from long range with a little more frequency on Senior Night, when would he?
So Jellison did, and with considerable success in leading the Rams to a 58-47 victory over Brewer on Thursday night in a Class A regular-season finale at Red Barry Gymnasium.
Jellison made five 3-pointers overall, three in the first quarter in staking the Rams to an early lead. He missed his first try from beyond the arc, but then hit three in a row during a three-minute stretch as Bangor moved out to a 15-8 lead six minutes into the contest.
“After I hit the first one I had a little more confidence, and it was Senior Night,” said Jellison, who finished with a game-high 16 points.
Bangor ends the season at 17-1 and as the No. 2 seed in Eastern Maine Class A. The Rams will have a chance to play at undefeated and top-ranked Edward Little at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A championship game before opening tournament play in a regional quarterfinal at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday, Feb. 17.
“I think we’re OK,” said Bangor coach Roger Reed, “but we’ve been working on two things: trying to get everybody to understand the importance of rebounding, and getting everyone to understand that if we will move the basketball one more pass, we’ll get better results.”
While Bangor will draw a preliminary round bye, Brewer is expected to enter postseason play as the 13th and final seed in Eastern A, thanks to Leavitt of Turner Center’s 69-61 victory over Oxford Hills of South Paris on Thursday night.
The Witches, who struggled offensively in a 37-19 loss to Bangor earlier this season, had more of an offensive flow in the rematch.
“I thought we played pretty well in terms of what we were trying to do, and what we needed to do as a team to prepare for a possible tournament situation,” said Witches’ coach Mark Reed. “We were patient when we needed to be patient, and we were aggressive and tried to make plays. I thought we were fairly confident in what we did, and our execution tonight was better in some areas than in other games.”
Brewer (8-10) pulled within 15-11 by the end of the first period behind some strong early play from Ben Valley and Brad Libby, but Ryan Weston came off the Bangor bench to score six points and grab four rebounds in the second period as the Rams held a 29-20 lead at intermission.
Brewer got as close as 32-25 on a 3-point goal by Rick Adams midway through the third quarter, but Jellison hit another 3-pointer to restore Bangor to a double-digit advantage.
Weston finished with 10 points and five rebounds, while junior guard Billy Zolper also scored 10 points for Bangor.
Libby paced Brewer with 15 points, while Valley added 13 points and eight rebounds and Ryan Babin scored 12 points.
