Rumford man gets jail for plotting to kill ex

PARIS – A Rumford man accused of plotting to have his ex-girlfriend and her husband murdered will serve 11 months behind bars.

Mark Ambrose, 32, was sentenced Thursday in Oxford County Superior Court to six years, with all but 11 months suspended, and four years of probation, the Sun Journal of Lewiston reported on its Web site.

Under a plea agreement, Ambrose pleaded guilty to one count of solicitation to commit murder. A second count was dismissed.

Ambrose, who faced a maximum sentence of 30 years, was accused of conspiring with another inmate at the Oxford County Jail to plan the killings of Bertha Jones, 28, and Shawn McKinnon, 40, both of Mexico.

Ambrose had been jailed since April for violating probation for criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. Police said he spoke with another inmate in August, arranging the crime and offering an undisclosed amount of money.

Undercover officers later visited the jail, with one of them posing as the hit man.
