Washington Academy posts 1st unbeaten season

LEE – The Washington Academy girls basketball team capped off the most successful regular season in the program’s history Friday night, outlasting Lee Academy 67-60 at Maxwell Gymnasium.

Kayla Wood scored 18 points and Ashley Tilton added 16 as the Raiders finished undefeated for the first time with an 18-0 record.

“The game really didn’t mean much for either team, other than the girls wanted to have an undefeated season,” said first-year WA coach Gary Wood. “They really wanted it bad, and they played hard tonight.

“At times we didn’t play super, super well, but give Lee credit, they’re a great team.”

This regular-season finale pitted WA against the top-seeded team in Eastern D in Lee, and the game was predictably close throughout.

Lee (15-3) led 36-32 at the end of a high-scoring first half and 49-48 through three periods. The Pandas maintained a 51-50 edge early in the fourth quarter before WA mounted a decisive run and built its lead to as many as nine points.

“We switched to a 2-3 zone part way through the fourth quarter just to take away a little of their penetration, and luckily they didn’t hit too many outside shots,” said Wood. “We don’t play too much zone, but we tried it and it worked out well for us.

“And we hit some good foul shots down the stretch, we hit some clutch shots. The girls just played their hearts out.”

Lauren Finn added 15 points, including four 3-pointers, for Washington Academy.

Brooke Harris led 15-3 Lee with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Amanda Gifford scored 15 and Brooke Harris added 12 for the Pandas.

Both teams now advance to postseason play, which for WA begins with a regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

“Last year we finished third, which was the best finish we’ve had, but we lost in the quarterfinals,” said Wood. “We’re hoping to get over the hump this year, win a quarterfinal and hopefully go from there.”
