Bangor water crews tackle 2 main breaks

BANGOR – A pair of water main breaks over the weekend not only kept repair crews from the Bangor Water District busy, they also postponed the Class A and Class D state cheerleading championships set for Saturday afternoon at the Bangor Auditorium.

The cheering championships have been rescheduled for 6 tonight, according to Bass Park officials.

The first of the breaks occurred early Friday evening on Birch Street, between State and Hancock streets, district engineer Weston Haskell said Saturday. That break, which involved a 4-inch main, affected about eight buildings, most of them apartment buildings. Service was restored to that area by about 11 p.m.

The second break, involving an 8-inch main, occurred about 10 a.m. on lower Buck Street, between the Bangor Daily News and the Bangor Auditorium and Civic Center, during the Class B and Class C state cheerleading competitions.

While that break affected only a few district customers, it did inconvenience some of the roughly 2,500 people who attended the cheering event.

The auditorium was closed to the public after the awards for those two divisions were handed out, Bass Park Director Mike Dyer said Saturday.
