In anticipation of the snow storm forecast to strike Maine today, Central Maine Power and the Red Cross on Tuesday offered the following safety and preparedness tips:

. Stay indoors during the storm. If you do go outside, several layers of lightweight clothing will keep you warmer than a single heavy coat. Gloves and a hat will prevent loss of body heat and cover your mouth to protect your lungs.

. Avoid traveling by car in a storm, but if it is necessary be sure to let someone know your destination, the route you plan to take and when you expect to arrive. Also be sure to have a first aid kit, flashlight and extra batteries, as well as other supplies on in the vehicle.

For more winter storm preparedness tips, check out the Red Cross Web site at www.southernmaineredcross.org or www.redcross.org.

“Everyone should stay clear of any downed power lines and fallen trees or limbs that may be tangled in the lines,” John Carroll, CMP spokesman, said in a press release. “These should all be considered live and dangerous. Customers should leave the cleanup to our crews, who are trained and equipped to handle these situations safely.”

To stay safe and comfortable if power outages occur:

. Keep battery-powered flashlights and radios on hand, along with supplies of drinking water and nonperishable foods.

. When you use an emergency heating source – like a wood stove, fireplace or kerosene heater – keep fuels away from the flames and be sure to ventilate properly.

. Never use grills or camp stoves indoors – they can give off dangerous gasses.
