MMA plans distance grad course

CASTINE – Maine Maritime Academy’s Loeb-Sullivan School of International Business and Logistics has announced that the graduate division of the school will offer a distance education course this spring via ATM videoconferencing technology.

International Human Resource Development, an intensive monthlong course, will target those who work in diverse workforce environments domestically or overseas. Plans are to offer the course through ATM at locations in Bangor, Augusta and Portland, and on the Maine Maritime Academy campus in Castine from 6:30-9 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, May 7-June 4.

Students enrolled in international human resource development classes will learn to evaluate and design training and development programs and performance appraisal systems, communicate effectively across cultures and address international workforce issues. Maritime and retail management representatives have been invited to present “real world” case studies for discussion. A baccalaureate undergraduate degree is a prerequisite for enrollment in the course.

Completion of the course carries three graduate-level academic credits, or 1-4.5 continuing education units.

The course will be taught by Dr. Elaine Potoker, professor in the undergraduate and graduate divisions of the Loeb-Sullivan School of International Business and Logistics.

Potoker has more than 20 years of experience in international business, and has traveled extensively to domestic and international locations in a management, sales and marketing capacity.

According to professor George Schatz, acting director of graduate studies and acting chairman of the undergraduate division of MMA’s Loeb-Sullivan School, plans are in place to continue the school’s commitment to public outreach. Through remote access programming, the college aims to serve the business community by offering advanced educational opportunities with minimal disruption to the lives and practices of executives.

Future graduate classes in subjects such as accounting, financial management, logistics and supply chain strategy, materials management, and international transportation management will be offered at satellite locations, enabling students to pursue a master of science degree in maritime management, international business or global supply chain management.
