Camp Bangor fair

BANGOR – For the seventh year, local area parents and children are invited to attend United Way of Eastern Maine’s Free Camp Fair, 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Bangor Civic Center.

Families with children in grades three through six in the Bangor public school system are eligible for United Way of Eastern Maine’s Camp Bangor Program, which offers $800 scholarships to current third- and fourth-grade pupils, and $1,000 scholarships to fifth- and sixth-grade pupils to attend Maine summer camps of their choice, after meeting good citizenship guidelines and volunteering in the community. However, those with an interest in learning more about Maine summer camp programs are encouraged to attend.

“The Camp Fair is a fun and quick way to go shopping for Maine camp programs that best match children’s interests,” said Sara Yasner, United Way of Eastern Maine’s Camp Bangor program director. “Last year, hundreds of families came out for the fair. This year we would love to see even more children take part in the Camp Bangor program.”

A 2007 Camp Directory with information on more than 125 camp programs across Maine and other Camp Bangor program details will be available at www.unitedwayem.org by Feb. 19, while additions on paper will be distributed to eligible students through the schools in mid-March. Additional copies will be available in the children’s department of Bangor Public Library, as well.

The United Way’s Camp Bangor program is funded by The Libra Foundation, a private foundation established by philanthropist Elizabeth B. Noyce. The city co-sponsors the camp fair and sponsors the Citywide Clean Up and Barbecue, which takes place in May.

Knauss Fellowship Program

A University of Maine alumna who recently completed the Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship Program is now working on marine and coastal policy issues in North Carolina.

Sheril Kirshenbaum is an associate in research for ocean and coastal policy at the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University, where she will analyze regional ecosystem-based management initiatives and assist with environmental communications outreach. She received master’s degrees in marine biology and marine policy from the University of Maine, where she studied population dynamics and socio-economics of the Maine sea cucumber fishery.

The Knauss Fellowship Program serves students who have an interest in ocean and coastal resources and the national policy decisions affecting those resources. The program, sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Sea Grant College Program, matches graduate students with hosts in the legislative and executive branches of government or institutions in the Washington area for a one-year fellowship.

Any student who, on April 5, is in a graduate or professional program in a marine or aquatic-related field at a United States accredited institution of higher education may apply to the National Sea Grant Office through the local Sea Grant program. The deadline for applications to the Maine Sea Grant Program is Friday, March 9. The dates of the official fellowship are Feb. 1, 2008-Jan. 31, 2009.
