Abbot man sentenced in theft of granite

An Abbot man was found guilty Friday of Class E theft and Class D criminal mischief during a jury-waived trial in a case involving granite taken from a house foundation.

The decision came in Piscataquis County Superior Court in Dover-Foxcroft.

Carl Vainio, 64, was fined $300 for criminal mischief and was ordered to pay $300 restitution. He was fined $150 for the theft.

The charges stem from granite that Vainio had taken in June 2006 from the foundation of a house in Monson that was being torn down.

He also pleaded no contest to three counts of Class D criminal mischief that occurred after a dispute with a Monson homeowner.

In retaliation, Vainio dumped slate to block the homeowner’s driveway in April and May 2005 and May 2006, according to District Attorney R. Christopher Almy.

Vainio was fined $200, $400, and $800 on the first, second and third counts respectively. He also was ordered to pay $200 restitution on each of the three counts.
