BANGOR – After splitting in the regular season with Winslow, No. 3 Camden Hills could have been a bit worried coming into Friday’s Eastern Maine Class B boys quarterfinal against the No. 11 Black Raiders.
Instead, the Windjammers were confident. And it showed all night long.
Camden Hills controlled the game from the first possession, when Paul Campbell drained a 3-pointer eight seconds after the opening tip, and rolled to an easy 84-59 victory at the Bangor Auditorium.
Campbell finished with 13 points, but it was backup guard Paul Draper who paced the semifinal-bound Windjammers with 23 points.
“We were really focused on this game,” Draper said. “The second time we played Winslow in the regular season, we came out really flat and they outhustled us. We knew coming into this one that’s what we needed to do. That was the key [Friday], we really had to outwork them.”
Camden Hills (15-4) will face No. 2 Ellsworth on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. The Eagles earned an 87-75 triple-overtime winner over No. 7 Hermon in Friday’s second quarterfinal.
The Black Raiders, who made the quarterfinals thanks to a preliminary-round upset of No. 6 MDI, wrapped up their season with an 11-9 mark.
Campbell’s 3-pointer sparked the Windjammers to a 12-0 opening run in a turnover-plagued, foul-filled contest. The teams combined for 70 free-throw attempts, with the Windjammers going 30-for-39 at the free-throw line.
They also hit 24 of their 48 field-goal attempts – some of which were wide-open midrange jumpers.
“I think the big key to that was we really focused on the fast break,” Draper said. “That was huge. When we started going it opened up the floor everywhere.”
Christian Pieri scored 16 points and Gordon Fischer added 10.
“They came ready to play and that was nice to see,” Camden Hills coach Jeff Hart said. “Sometimes in the quarterfinal round you come up here with 18-0 teams and play tentative. I told them, that’s the quickest way to spend the winter at home. There was no tentative tonight.”
The Black Raiders didn’t help themselves with 16 first-half turnovers and two players in foul trouble in the first quarter.
“We tried to compete, tried to stay close, and we just couldn’t overcome the deficit,” said Winslow coach Scott Wood.
John Goulette led Winslow with 15 points.
