WESTBROOK – An 82-year-old man was killed when his unattended pickup truck began rolling and overturned on top of him in his driveway, police said.
Clarence Carter apparently left the truck in neutral and it started to roll backward down the driveway Saturday afternoon, said Police Chief Paul McCarthy.
Carter was trying to climb back into the truck to stop the vehicle when it hit a retaining wall and rolled over on top of him, McCarthy said. Several people passed by without realizing Carter was pinned under the truck before someone dialed 911. The 20-minute delay was not a factor in Carter’s death, McCarthy said. “We believe he was killed instantly,” the chief said.
