ELLSWORTH – The Woodlawn Museum was one of two Maine landmarks to receive grants recently from Lowe’s and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The grants, announced last week, are part of a $1 million contribution from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation.

“Lowe’s is proud to support efforts aligned with our mission of improving the places where our customers, employees and families live, work and play,” Larry D. Stone, chairman of the Lowe’s foundation, said in a press release.

Lowe’s, a national chain of retail home improvement stores, is opening a store later this year off Route 3 in Ellsworth.

Woodlawn Museum, the former home of Col. John Black, will receive $30,000 to restore the building’s many windows, which have been compromised by flaking paint and loose glazing.

The museum is a rare time capsule of the mid-1800s when Black and his family, prominent members of Maine’s lumber industry, called it home. It features furniture and other collections that depict the economic, social and domestic conditions of that era.

The other grant to benefit Maine awards $50,000 to the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Bristol and will be used to restore the structure’s exterior masonry.
