Big School (Classes A-B)
FRANK CARBONE
A senior on the Mount Desert Island swimming team, Carbone won two events and anchored two first-place relay teams in leading the Trojans to their fourth consecutive Class A state championship. Carbone won the 200 and 400 freestyle races, and swam the final leg on the victorious 200 free and 400 free relay events, and was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Swimmer.
Small School (Classes C-D)
TOM BIRD
A senior forward for the Lee Academy basketball team, Bird scored a game-high 26 points as the fourth-ranked Pandas pulled away from No. 5 Limestone Community School-Maine School of Science and Mathematics in an Eastern D boys basketball quarterfinal. Bird shot 7 of 8 from the free-throw line, helping Lee shoot 21 of 24 from the line as a team.
GIRLS
Big School (Classes A-B)
EMMA CHAIKEN
A senior on the Bangor swimming and diving team, Chaiken won the Class A state diving championship with a score of 284.10 points to help the Rams win their second straight state team crown. Chaiken was the runner-up last year.
Small School (Classes C-D)
COURTNEY HILL
The Calais sophomore guard racked up 18 points, six steals and four assists as the No. 8 Blue Devils knocked off No. 1 Washington Academy 58-53 in an Eastern Maine Class C quarterfinal Tuesday. The Raiders, who were 18-0, beat Calais twice in the regular season.
