A Bangor man was charged with assault twice Sunday for allegedly assaulting a roommate and later a corrections officer at Penobscot County Jail.

Police say Zane Schmauderer, 47, repeatedly kicked his roommate Stephen Marshall, 53, in the head while Marshall was on the floor.

When officers arrived at the Third Street apartment shortly after midnight, they noticed Marshall was holding a bloody towel to his face, and they asked Schmauderer what happened. He said that the two got into an argument and “Stephen lost.”

Marshall said he had asked Schmauderer to quiet down and instead he became enraged.

Marshall was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

According to reports, a background check revealed that Schmauderer had a warrant for failure to appear. He was placed under arrest and taken to jail.

At approximately 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Bangor police went to the jail after Schmauderer apparently punched a corrections officer in the chin and spit on him. Reports said Schmauderer became combative after he learned a clinician had placed him under extreme suicide watch.

Schmauderer was being led to his cell when the attack occurred.

The officer reportedly sprayed Schmauderer with Mace, but he still spit at and cursed him. With assistance from others, the officer restrained him.

The corrections officer was not injured in the fight.

Schmauderer is scheduled to appear in court today.
