Careful consolidation

The public school consolidation effort is very worthwhile and necessary at this time in our state. Everyone agrees that with declining population and high property taxes, change is in order. Why would Commissioner Susan Gendron and Gov. John Baldacci muddy these understandings by initiating ridiculous and dangerous proposals that are divisive at a time when people agree that change must occur?

I certainly hope the legislation will look beyond the governor’s less than intelligent plan and do what can be done. The state must make these changes because municipalities, for obvious political reasons, won’t facilitate radical change. There are many, many modifications that should be initiated by the state that would assist in lowering taxes and be a catalyst for improved education for our young students.

I would further suggest that consolidation efforts be extended to higher education as well, where millions of dollars could be saved without negatively affecting education for our college students. The University of Maine system, should be scrutinized and challenged in the same manner as our public schools.

Now is the time for change before the state loses even more of our young people because they can’t afford to stay in Maine. The positive point is that change can be accomplished that will not negatively affect the quality of education. It would also lead toward lowering in-state tuition rates which is a definite plus for our young people.
