ELLSWORTH – A Sullivan man faces multiple charges after he allegedly led police on a short, high-speed chase that ended in a crash early Monday morning.
Ellsworth police arrested Christopher Kidder, 23, after his car crashed into a telephone pole on Route 3. According to police reports, Officer Glenn Moshier spotted a vehicle on High Street at about 12:24 a.m. Monday. The vehicle had been reported stolen and Moshier attempted to stop it, but the operator fled at a high rate of speed.
The chase headed out High Street, onto Route 3 and up Beckwith Hill. According to Moshier’s report, Kidder failed to negotiate a corner near Hilltop Mobile and struck a utility pole. Kidder was not injured in the crash. He was arrested and taken to the Hancock County Jail where he was charged with attempting to elude an officer, aggravated criminal mischief, theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, criminal speed and operating without a license.
Kidder also had an active warrant for failure to appear and also was on probation from a previous conviction.
Damage to the stolen vehicle, a 1996 Pontiac Bonneville, was estimated at $6,000. Police estimated the cost to replace the utility pole at $3,000.
Route 3 was shut down briefly after the accident.
