The Orono Middle School chess team is the undefeated champion in the Penobscot Valley Middle League. The team will compete in the State Chess Championship at the University of Maine on March 10.

Team members were awarded Best Season Record Trophies. Avery Cole had the best record in the league with 8.66 points per game, Nick Peterson and Joiawei Zou tied for second place with 8.44 points per game. Nikolai Renedo received fifth place, and Paul Robinson was ninth place.

Other team members are Yuvall Boss, Sean Hennessey and John Paul. Ryan Tripp, a University of Maine sophomore majoring in English, is the team coach. Tripp is the previous “first board” of the Orono High School chess team.
