Insurance claim repays recycling center losses

DOVER-FOXCROFT – An insurance claim to cover the loss of recycling revenue after a fire destroyed the regional recycling center in February 2005 has been settled.

Selectmen this week accepted a $52,670 check to settle the town’s business interruption insurance claim.

The business interruption piece was the only outstanding claim, according to Town Manager Jack Clukey.

“We were made whole on the revenue loss part,” Clukey told selectmen. He said the check will reimburse the solid waste account for expenses that were paid.

The regional facility was unable to recycle glass and tin cans after the fire loss but continued to recycle plastic, cardboard, newspapers and magazines. The glass and tin cans were included in the waste stream until the new facility opened last month.

Building and equipment loss claims were settled in early 2006. The town received $223,000 for the loss of the building and $204,000 for equipment loss.

The fire, which started from a waste-oil furnace, destroyed three bailers, a fork lift, a front-end loader, crushers, and other equipment.

The town has since constructed a new facility which opened in January.
