Body of female found on Union Street

BANGOR – An unidentified female body was found near a garage off Union Street on Saturday evening, officials said Sunday.

Bangor police received a call at 7:58 p.m. Saturday evening about a “possible deceased person” behind 148 Union St., said Bangor police Lt. Detective Tim Reid. An autopsy was performed on the body in Augusta at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Reid said.

Reid declined to give more information, and the State Medical Examiner’s Office would only say the body is a “Jane Doe.”

The call came from a building adjacent to Shaw House, a homeless shelter for youth located at 136 Union St. Shaw House residents Josh Neptune, 15, and Jake Pomelow, 17, claimed to have discovered the body Saturday evening.

Neptune and Pomelow said they were walking past a red garage adjacent to the Shaw House around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday when they saw a bag that contained what looked like a dog.

The bag was buried in the snow between the garage and a blue car, so they dragged it out to an open space in front of the garage, they said.

“I cut the bag open,” Pomelow said. “It [the body] was wrapped in a comforter blanket and a tarp.”

Pomelow said he saw only the torso and rear end of the body and could not identify its sex or age. He said the body looked like that of a child between the ages of 6 and 10. Police would only confirm that the body was female.

“It looked like the body was mangled. It looked awful,” Neptune said.

The boys said they used a cell phone to call police and then went to the station for questioning Saturday night.

Neither police nor staff at the Shaw House would comment on whether the body discovered is connected to the Shaw House.

Beside the garage Sunday afternoon were numerous footprints in the snow, a pair of latex gloves and brown stains that looked like blood.

“It was a bad night, a bad night,” Neptune said.
