BANGOR – A Canadian man living in Aroostook County traveling with his children was arrested Sunday at the Houlton border crossing and charged with importing methamphetamine.
Border protection agents allegedly found 981/2 pills in the pocket of his jacket.
Stephane Desrosiers, 34, of Houlton was being held in the Penobscot County Jail on Monday, pending a bail hearing Thursday in U.S. District Court.
If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $1 million.
Desrosiers is a Canadian citizen with permanent residence in the United States, according to court documents. The pills allegedly were discovered when Desrosiers, who was traveling in a 1993 Ford pickup with a Maine license plate, was referred by a Border Patrol agent for a secondary inspection.
When Desrosiers asked to take his daughters to the restroom, agents patted him down, then examined his jacket, where the pills were found in a plastic bag in the breast pocket, according to court documents.
Desrosiers allegedly told agents that he got the pills in Canada and that they were for his own use.
He said that he works as a truck driver, making two trips to New York per week and “has trouble with the long hours,” according to court documents.
