BANGOR – An Orono man who last month allegedly stole a tractor-trailer from Dysart’s Truck Stop in Hermon and led police on a chase through Bangor, Veazie and Orono was indicted Monday by the Penobscot County grand jury.

Lee Harold Meservie, 42, was indicted on charges of theft by unauthorized taking, aggravated criminal mischief, eluding an officer, three counts of passing a roadblock, seven counts of reckless conduct, failure to stop for an officer, driving to endanger and two counts of unauthorized use of property.

If convicted he faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000 on the theft charge alone. He also could be ordered to pay restitution to Dysart’s Transportation Inc. for damage to the vehicle, Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. for the replacement cost of the pole he allegedly hit, and to law enforcement agencies for any damage to cruisers.

Meservie allegedly stole the tractor-trailer that had been left running in the parking lot of the popular truck stop about noon Feb. 11.

The truck was spotted at Mount Hope and Forest avenues in Bangor, then ran cruisers off Hogan Road, endangered weekend shoppers and drove over four spike mats before it came rolling to a halt in Orono at Stillwater Avenue and Kelly Road, according to police.

The driver allegedly clipped and broke a utility pole, leaving 50 to 60 homes without power for more than an hour.

The grand jury Monday also indicted a Bangor man for allegedly attempting to rob a Chinese restaurant at knifepoint in January.

Shawn A. Conary, 33, was indicted for robbery, aggravated assault and criminal threatening. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison on the robbery charge alone.

Conary, who did not get away with any cash, allegedly pulled a knife on an employee at Chopsticks Restaurant on Center Street in Bangor on Jan. 26 after he and his girlfriend went there to pick up an order.

When told the cost, the woman allegedly said that she did not have enough money but would run home to get more. The couple lived nearby, according to police.

After she left, Conary allegedly grabbed a male employee and held a knife to his throat. The man fought off his assailant, according to court documents, and knocked Conary to the floor. The assailant fled the restaurant on foot.

Both men are scheduled to be arraigned March 29 in Penobscot County Superior Court.

Meservie and Conary remained in the Penobscot County Jail on Monday, unable to make bail.
