A Greene man was arrested on three charges Tuesday evening in Orono after an argument with his ex-girlfriend.
The couple was sitting in a vehicle outside a Margin Street residence where Michael Goyette, 29, of Greene was going to visit a friend. Goyette became angry when his ex-girlfriend refused to drive him to Lewiston so he could pick up his veterans check and pay her the child support he owed.
She said she couldn’t because she didn’t have money to pay for the trip.
“He became upset and struck the rearview mirror with his fist and threw the car keys onto the dash,” Orono police Sgt. Scott Wilcox read from the police report. The mirror and windshield both were cracked.
The woman told police that when the two got out of the vehicle Goyette shoved her to the ground and threw ice and snow at her as he continued to yell.
She eventually broke away and called police.
When police arrived at the Margin Street residence Goyette admitted arguing with his ex over money, but he claimed she hit him and that he pushed her into the snowbank and threw snow on her head to get to her to calm down.
Goyette was arrested for criminal mischief for damaging the mirror and windshield and domestic assault. He also admitted to driving in the area and was charged with operating after suspension.
He was taken to Penobscot County Jail and was expected to appear Wednesday at 3rd District Court in Bangor.
A car parked on Church Street in Brewer that was left unlocked and running with its keys in the ignition was taken around 10 p.m. Tuesday, Lt. Chris Martin said Wednesday.
The blue 2000 Hyundai Sonata, parked on the side of the street, was taken by an unknown person and no suspects have been identified. Maine State Police helped search for the vehicle to no avail.
In the cold of winter it’s common for people to leave their vehicles running, Martin acknowledged.
But he suggested that drivers keep a separate set of keys on them so they can still lock their cars after they start them to warm up.
“That way, you can lock it while it’s warming up,” Martin said.
Brewer firefighters responded to two fires – one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday – that resulted in damage to a garage and an attic, Fire Chief Rick Bronson said Wednesday.
The first fire at 32 Starlight Lane on Tuesday occurred in the garage and destroyed a vehicle and damaged the garage, he said.
The second fire was in the attic at Green Point Auto Parts on Green Point Road and happened when wood against the chimney overheated, Bronson said.
“We spent quite awhile finding it,” he said.
No injuries were reported in either fire.
“We saved two structures in two days,” Bronson said.
