HAMPDEN – The Foreign Language Association of Maine Student Recognition Award, the highest honor that can be given to a high school foreign language student, will be presented to a Hampden Academy senior on March 9 in Portland.
Nathaniel Brown, the son of Dr. Eric Brown and Jean Camuso, was nominated for the FLAME award by his AP French teacher, Marisue Schuiling.
“He is a top-notch student in my AP French class this year, as well as an outstanding AP Latin student at Hampden Academy,” Schuiling wrote in her nomination. “In addition, Nate has been taking Greek independently with his Latin teacher here, as well as beginning Russian at the University of Maine.”
The teacher also pointed out “how well he fits in and adds to the class as a whole. Nate is a mature, confident person who has a quick wit and a passion for learning languages.”
Brown is president of the Maine State Junior Classics League, which recently held a statewide conference at Hampden.
He has attended Concordia Language French Camp and volunteers as an aide in his teacher’s French II class.
Schuiling calls Brown “the most gifted language student I have ever had the pleasure to teach.”
