SEARSPORT – Residents supported the pro-planning platform of Roland LaReau in voting on Tuesday, electing him selectman.

LaReau defeated Jim Cunningham, 176 to 149.

LaReau, 63, who retired in town with his wife three years ago after moving from the Worcester, Mass., area, has been an ardent supporter of the town’s comprehensive plan and the proposed land use regulations which residents will be asked to adopt at Saturday’s annual town meeting.

Cunningham, 64, supports an article on the town meeting warrant which, if approved, would rescind the comprehensive plan. The plan was adopted in 2002. He also advocates defeating at the meeting the land use regulation ordinance.

LaReau succeeds Jack Merrithew as selectman for a three-year term. Merrithew did not seek re-election. Cunningham remains a Searsport representative to the SAD 56 board.
