Bates, Colby fare well
Skiers from Bates College in Lewiston and Colby College of Waterville fared well at the NCAA Championships at Attitash, N.H.
On the women’s side, Megan Papineau of Bates placed 12th in the giant slalom, while teammates Liz Thompson and Emily Sampson finished 21st and 26th, respectively.
Papineau recorded a 1 minute, 17.37-second time on her first run and a 1:16.73 on her second, good for a 2:34.10. Thompson finished in 2:37.37 and Sampson in 2:38.73.
The Bobcats sit in sixth place in the team ranks with 61 points.
On the men’s side, Leo Menard paced Bates with a 22nd-place finish in 2:25.70 while Dan Loman was 30th in 2:27.07. Bates’ 118 points are good for 12th place.
For the White Mules, Joey Centauro captured 24th place in 2:26.24 and Josh Kernan 25th in 2:26.33.
Centauro had runs of 1:13.97 and 1:12.27 and Kernan 1:14.59 and 1:11.59.
Men’s hockey
Vermont 3, Boston U. 2
BOSTON – Brayden Irwin scored the game-winning goal as Vermont went ahead of Boston 1-0 in their best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal series.
Irwin broke a 2-2 tie at 1:52 of the second period, and the Catamounts held on for the win as Joe Fallon made 20 saves.
John McCarthy put BU on the scoreboard at 2:19 of the opening period, and Mark Lutz tied it for Vermont less than a minute later. Peter Lenes put Vermont up 2-1 at 9:24 before BU’s Kenny Roche evened it again just over five minutes later.
John Curry had 24 saves for BU.
New Hampshire 4, Providence 0
DURHAM, N.H. – Led by the 42-save shutout effort of Kevin Regan and three assists from Mike Radja New Hampshire defeated Providence 4-0 on Thursday in the Hockey East to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three quarterfinal series.
UNH’s (24-9-2, 18-7-2) Regan, who stopped 16 shots in the first period and 17 in the second, recorded his second shutout of the season and fifth of his career. In addition to Radja, Jacob Micflikier and Brett Hemingway both finished with a goal and an assist.
Providence (10-22-3, 9-15-3) starting goalie Tyler Sims played just the first period and surrendered two goals on 12 shots. Chris Mannix went the rest of the way and stopped 12 shots.
Boston College 3, Northeastern 0
BOSTON – Brock Bradford scored two goals to lead Boston College to a 3-0 win over Northeastern on Thursday night and a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three Hockey East Tournament series.
Nathan Gerbe assisted on all three of the Eagles’ goals and Cory Schneider got 25 saves for the shut out.
Bradford broke a scoreless tie at 18:21 of the first period. Ben Smith made it 2-0 on a power play just over six minutes into the second, and assisted on Bradford’s final goal at 12:06 of the third period.
