SCRANTON, Pa. – Bowdoin College shot 55 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and forced 23 Rochester turnovers as the top-ranked Polar Bears of Brunswick advanced to the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Elite Eight for the sixth consecutive year with a 63-53 Sweet Sixteen victory Friday.

Bowdoin will play Mary Washington, a 48-45 winner over host Scranton on Friday night, at 7 p.m. Saturday for the right to advance to the Division III Final Four.

The Polar Bears made a season-high 11 3-point goals in 20 attempts, with Eileen Flaherty 4 of 5 from long range and Jill Anelauskas making 3 of 6 tries.

Bowdoin made seven 3-pointers and forced 15 turnovers alone in the first half to build a 29-22 lead.

Rochester got within four points with 14 minutes remaining, but Flaherty hit back-to-back 3-pointers during a 7-2 run that restored Bowdoin to a 45-36 advantage with 11 minutes left.

Rochester closed back within six points with five minutes left, but Anelauskas scored nine of Bowdoin’s final 11 points, including a key 3-pointer with 3:15 left.

Anelauskas led Bowdoin with 21 points, while Flaherty added 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals.

Former Dirigo of Dixfield standout Alexa Kaubris contributed 12 points for the Polar Bears, while point guard Katie Cummings had eight assists, four steals and no turnovers.

At Boston, Lisa Winkle had 13 points and 13 rebounds to lift Calvin College of Grand Rapids, Mich., to victory over the University of Southern Maine in the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 semifinal.

Brook VanEck led the Knights with 14 points.

Ashley Marble led the Huskies with 32 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Stacey Kent and Angela Santa Fe chipped in eight points apiece.

Maine records split

At Tallahassee, Fla., Black Bear freshman pitcher Jessica Ghazali picked up her fourth win this week and fifth win of the season, allowing just three hits and one unearned run in a 5-1 Maine victory over Appalachian State in the Bears’ second game at the Florida State Invitational.

Syracuse won the first game 6-0.

In the second game, Ashley Waters went 2-for-4 with a double, a single and two RBIs. Kristie Hawkins hit two singles and drove in two runs. The Black Bears recorded seven stolen bases.

In the first game, Brittany Gardner struck out eight and allowed six hits as the Orange shut out the Black Bears.

Tara Vilardo hit three singles for Maine. Jenna Balent gave up 13 hits and six earned runs in five innings.

At Palm Beach, Fla., Brian Pellegrini hit a two-run home run in the first inning to get St. Bonaventure started en route to the win over Maine.

Pellegrini added an RBI double later in the game and Kevin Suminski had a two-run double and two-run triple.

Mark Ostrander hit a solo home run for the Black Bears while Billy Cather added an RBI double.

Widener sweeps Husson

At Odessa, Fla., Tristian Harner tossed a three-hitter, striking out eight, to pitch the Pride of Chester, Pa., past the Eagles 7-1 in the opener of their doubleheader.

In the nightcap, the Pride scored seven runs in the fourth to take the lead for good en route to a 15-11 victory.

In the opener, Colin Keelan had a double and two singles and Mike Villari added three singles to pace Widener.

Joe Robicheau knocked in Jon Tefft in the fifth for Husson. Danny White, Brian McGinley, and Bryan Biggers each had a single. Sam Adolphsen was roughed up for six runs in the sixth and took the loss.

In the second game, Dan Ferry tripled and had three RBIs, and Brian Campbell added a double and single and two RBIs for the Pride.

Dennis Graham led the Eagles with two doubles, a single, and two RBIs. P.J. Dowe had three RBIs. White, Adam Sheehan, and Tefft each contributed a pair of singles. Keith Nason took the loss.
