TALLAHASSEE, Fla., – The University of Maine softball team advanced to the championship game of the Florida State Invitational’s silver bracket thanks to a 9-7 win over Florida A&M Sunday morning, but the Black Bears fell to Georgia State 4-3 in the bracket final Sunday afternoon.
Maine beat Georgia State 5-3 Saturday morning for head coach Stacey Sullivan’s 100th career win but picked up losses later that day to 25-ranked Florida State (9-1, 5 innings) and No. 18 Southern Illinois (8-3).
The Bears went 3-4 in the tournament and their record now stands at 13-9.
In Sunday’s first game, Beth Foltz doubled, singled and drove in two runs for the Black Bears. Kristen Calvetti hit three singles and tallied an RBI while Alexis Souhlaris singled twice and plated a run.
In Saturday’s first game, Maine’s Erin Iandoli homered and singled for two RBIs while Alexis Souhlaris singled and drove in two runs. Kristie Hawkins doubled and singled.
Nikki Bradford led the Panthers with a single and two RBIs.
In Saturday’s second game, Seminole pitcher Terese Gober fanned six in the 1-hitter.
Hawkins singled for Maine’s only hit, Souhlaris recorded an RBI and Ashley Waters scored in the fourth for the Bears’ run. Maine’s Jessica Ghazali allowed five earned runs and nine hits but no walks and also struck out three.
In Saturday’s third game, the Salukis scored four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to erase a 3-0 Maine lead. Katie Wilson paced Southern Illinois with a 3-run homer.
Waters singled twice and knocked in two runs for the Bears.

At Boca Raton, Fla., Saturday, Scott Simon hit a grand slam in the fifth inning as Northern Illinois rolled over the Black Bears.
Jesse Seykora homered, doubled, and singled and scored four runs for the Huskies.
Maine’s Kevin McAvoy doubled and Joel Barrett scored their lone run in the seventh inning.

At Palm Beach, Fla., Sunday, Rich Goulian hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to help the Rams tip the Bears.
Joel Barrett’s first homer of the season gave Maine a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth. He also singled and drove in two runs. Myckie Lugbauer doubled and singled to knock in a run and Billy Cather singled twice.

Husson loses two
At Temple Terrace, Fla., John Minio doubled and singled to drive in two runs and lead Drew past Husson 5-0 on Saturday. Mount St. Joseph defeated the Eagles 11-0 on Sunday.
On Saturday, Matt Hicks and Paul Kierstead each singled twice and scored for Drew University.
George Keefe hit two singles for Husson.
On Sunday, Justin Houston drove in two runs on two singles for College of Mount St. Joseph.
Danny White singled twice for the Eagles.
