MILFORD – A body found Tuesday at a dam along the Penobscot River is believed to be that of a canoeist who disappeared early Christmas Eve, the Maine Warden Service said.

Richard Jenkins of Levant was one of two men in the canoe that capsized early Dec. 24. The 36-year-old man’s body was found at a grate in the dam in Milford, said Warden Sgt. Adam Gormley.

The other canoeist, 36-year-old Richard Holmes of Indian Island, made it to shore and called for help. The two men were crossing the Penobscot River when their canoe overturned.

Divers searched for Jenkins after the accident but suspended their search because of dangerous conditions in the river.

The case was investigated by District Warden Jim Fahey.
