Fireman’s Ball to benefit Hose 5 Fire Museum

You are cordially invited to get out some dancing clothes and attend the 11th annual Fireman’s Ball from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday, March 17, at the Elks Club on Odlin Road in Bangor.

Event chairwoman Bonnie McCrea reports tickets are $60 for couples and $30 for singles, and can be purchased at the Bangor Fire Department’s Central Fire Station on Main Street.

All proceeds benefit Bangor’s Hose 5 Fire Museum, and more information is available by calling 992-4700.

The evening includes a social hour, dinner, and dancing to music provided by a disc jockey, McCrea said, and “firefighters are encouraged to wear their dress blues” for this very special event.

Further, McCrea told me that “in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, all the decorations will be in green” so if you have something special to wear that is green, you’ll fit right in!

Roger George of Bangor called last week to report that tickets are now on sale for the second annual production of Music Off Broadway, with two performances scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at Peakes Auditorium at Bangor High School.

The local production is “back by popular demand,” George said of the Bangor Noon Rotary Club’s spring fundraiser, which he will produce with Josh Schmersal.

Tickets are $15 each, and can be purchased in advance at the Grasshopper Shop in downtown Bangor and at other outlets soon to be announced.

Many local “stars” are volunteering their time and talents for this event, which benefits the Bangor Y and Downeast Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Among those favorite local performers are Nancy Dymond, Darlene Mogul, Heather Astbury, Sharon Pelletier, Steve Gormley, John Grover, Chuck Sommers, Tyke McKay and several high school students.

Sandra Gordon of Waldo County Healthcare reports tables are available for rent for the sixth annual Baby Fair planned for 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at Troy Howard Middle School on Lincolnville Avenue, Route 52, in Belfast.

The fundraiser features new and used items for infants and young children.

The table rental fee of $20 is nonrefundable, and must be paid before the fair to guarantee your spot.

Proceeds from the table rental fees benefit Belfast Public Health Nursing Association, but renters can keep all other profits.

The fair, which features items such as clothes, toys, books, furniture and craft items, is free and open to the public.

Thanks to the leadership of Hermon Middle School eighth-graders Michael Bogan, Kelsey Carmichael, Kasey Fratini, Jordan Lorenz and Julie McDonald, this Hermon Class of 2011 is ready to take a Living Classroom trip in June to Boston.

In order that every child is able to make the trip, the class has been working hard to raise money through such events as a bottle drive and selling concessions at school basketball tournaments.

In addition, the Hermon PTA approved a $1,000 scholarship fund for the trip.

Now the young people are hoping that you can help them attain their goal of making it possible for every classmate to participate by inviting you to attend a Basket Bingo beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at Hermon Middle School.

The admission-donation is $15 for 15 games, with additional game cards available at the door for $5 per set.

The event, which is co-sponsored by the Old Town Knights of Columbus, will include a concession stand, door prizes, blackouts, and basket and 50-50 raffles.

Michelle Caliandro is trek volunteer coordinator for the American Lung Association Trek Across Maine.

That event, which attracts more than 2,000 cyclists and raises more than a million dollars, is June 15-17, beginning at Sunday River in Newry, and ending at Owls Head Transportation Museum.

Cynthia Magnuson of the American Cancer Society in Topsham doesn’t want you to worry if you forgot to order your daffodils for the coming ACS Daffodil Days.

Magnuson reports you can still purchase bouquets of 10 fresh daffodils for a $7 donation, March 19-25, at local Hannaford Supermarkets.
