ISLAND FALLS – The town’s emergency services workers will be getting a new home now that residents have voted to move forward building a fire station in town.
The vote to approve the new station came during the annual town meeting on Monday evening, which was attended by 86 residents, Town Clerk Cheryl McNally said Tuesday.
During the meeting, voters were asked to consider taking out a 10-year loan to purchase a pre-engineered building to serve as the new fire station. The pre-engineered building will be added on to the existing municipal building.
The current fire station is aging and no longer fits the department’s needs, and the new building will put all of the town’s emergency services under one roof.
On Monday evening, voters agreed to approve $26,000 toward the first payment on the loan. The total project is expected to cost approximately $200,000.
McNally said Tuesday that she is not sure when the town will move forward with the project, because town officials still have to solidify some final details of the plan.
This year’s municipal budget is up $29,000 over last year. McNally said that $20,000 of that increase is due to the need to purchase new accounting software for the town office.
The town’s current software is more than 10 years old.
Incumbents secured seats on the Board of Selectmen and the Community School District 9 board.
Incumbent Albert Clukey ran unopposed for a three-year selectman’s seat, and incumbents Gregory Ryan and Angela Rockwell also ran unopposed for two open seats on the CSD 9 board.
