MILFORD – The state medical examiner’s office confirmed Wednesday that a body found Tuesday at a dam along the Penobscot River was that of a canoeist who disappeared early Christmas Eve, the Maine Warden Service said.

Mark Latti of the Maine Warden Service said Richard Jenkins of Levant was one of two men in the canoe that capsized early Dec. 24. The 36-year-old man’s body was found near a grate in the dam in Milford earlier this week.

The medical examiner on Wednesday ruled Jenkins’ death an accidental drowning, Latti said.

The other canoeist, Richard Holmes, 36, of Indian Island, made it to shore and called for help. The two men were crossing the Penobscot River when their canoe overturned.

Divers searched for Jenkins after the accident but suspended their search because of dangerous conditions in the river.

Wednesday’s conclusions put an end to the investigation, Latti said.
