The Bangor-based Hurricane Swim Club will get a chance to compete this weekend along with the rest of the top swimmers in the state at Maine Swimming Inc.’s Winter Combined Championships in Brunswick.
The meet, which is open to USA Swimming-affiliated competitors who have qualified based on cutoff times, runs Thursday through Sunday. Today’s session starts at 4:30 p.m.
There will be two sessions per day Friday through Sunday with 8:30 a.m. starts all three mornings. Friday and Saturday’s evening sessions will begin at 5 p.m. and Sunday’s will s get under way at 4:30.
Admission is $1 per session.
The top 16 finishers in each event will score.
The Hurricanes join a host of teams that competed in last weekend’s YMCA state meet, including the Bangor YMCA Barracudas, Old Town-Orono YMCA’s Canoe City Swim Club, the Penobscot Region YMCA of Dover-Foxcroft, the Mount Desert Island YMCA Sharks, the Downeast Family YMCA Dolphins of Ellsworth, the Bay Area Swim Club Bluefish of the Waldo County YMCA in Belfast and the Penobscot Bay YMCA Sailfish of Rockport.
The top swimmers have the option of moving on to the Eastern Zone championship meet, which will be held March 29-31 in Buffalo, N.Y.
Coastal Maine Aquatics of Cape Elizabeth is the defending overall champion and the Long Reach Swim Club of the Bath Area YMCA, which won last week’s state YMCA championships, was the runner-up.
The MDI YMCA Sharks were fifth overall and third in the boys events.
