WASHINGTON – Democratic Reps. Michael Michaud and Tom Allen of Maine, along with four co-sponsors, introduced legislation Thursday aimed at creating jobs and reviving the economy of the most distressed counties in northern New England and New York.

The bill would create the Northern Border Economic Development Commission to promote economic development through regional planning, technical assistance and funding of projects.

“We need to be exploring every opportunity to bring jobs and opportunity to our region,” Michaud said. “Protecting Maine jobs and creating new jobs remains my number one priority. Promoting economic development in Maine and throughout the struggling areas of the Northeast through this commission could be a big part of that effort.”

The bill, as in years past, has gained bipartisan support from members of Congress in the northern border region. Reps. Paul Hodes, D-N.H.; Michael Arcuri, D-N.Y.; John McHugh, R-N.Y.; and Peter Welch D-Vt., are all original co-sponsors of the bill, along with Michaud and Allen.

The proposed commission would have an annual budget of $40 million. Community development districts and other nonprofits would be encouraged to bring project ideas to members.
