Amprobe meters

About 70,000 Amprobe digital clamp meters for electrical testing, manufactured by Amprobe Test Tools, are being recalled because the meters can fail to give a correct reading of voltage, causing the operator to believe the power is off and be at risk of shock, electrocution or thermal burns.

The following models of digital clamp meters are included: ACD-10PRO, ACD-10 TRMS-PRO, ACD-14 and ACD-14TRMS, except those model numbers followed by “FX” or “PLUS.” The model numbers are printed on the front of the meters, which are red and gray. The meters measure 0 to 600 volts alternating current, 0 to 600 volts direct current and 0 to 400 amps of alternating current.

The meters were sold by hardware stores, industrial distributors and electrical wholesalers around the country between January 2002 and December 2006. For a free replacement, call (800) 350-8661. For information, visit www.amprobe.com/recall or www.cpsc.gov.

Ben & Jerry’s ice cream

Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Inc. is recalling 250,000 pints of its Country Peach Cobbler ice cream because the containers do not list wheat as an ingredient.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of temporary health problems or illness if they eat the ice cream, the company said Friday.

Consumers who purchased Country Peach Cobbler with the dates Jan. 23, 24 or Feb. 8 or 9, 2008, printed on the bottom are advised to discard the pints. Ben & Jerry’s will give a full refund to consumers who send the base of an empty container back to the company.

Pet food

A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site – www.menufoods.com/recall – early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (800) 551-7392.
