BANGOR – Three weeks ago, Bryant Ciomei and Chris Byron were adversaries in a memorable battle.

Ciomei’s Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners nipped Byron’s Schenck Wolverines of East Millinocket 75-74 in a scintillating Eastern Maine Class D tournament final.

They were teammates Saturday morning and combined for 39 points as the Eastern Maine Class C-D All-Stars beat the Western Maine stars 88-72 in the annual McDonald’s Senior All-Star game at Husson College’s Newman Gymnasium.

In the Class A-B game, dynamic Portland High School star guard Andrew Duncanson scored 12 points and dished out five assists and South Portland’s Coleman Findlay had a game-high 14 points as the West stars prevailed 66-61.

In the C-D game, Ciomei poured in a game-high 21 points and grabbed six rebounds and Byron had 18 points to key the East’s triumph.

The East used a 32-14 run in the first half to build a 49-34 intermission lead and then withstood a 13-2 West run to open the second half.

The East stars used an ensuing 15-5 rally, featuring six points by Byron, to re-establish a 14-point lead (66-52), and they led by at least eight the rest of the way.

“We work pretty good together,” said Byron about the chemistry he has with Ciomei. “He sees the floor well and I like to run with him. We’re good teammates together.”

“We played [together] in a preseason tournament and we did the same thing. So it’s pretty good,” said Ciomei, who will take his talents to Maine Maritime Academy in the fall.

The East stars parlayed their speed and athleticism into several fast-break points. They also crashed the boards effectively and drew a lot of fouls.

They converted 20 of 33 free-throw attempts while the West starts went to the line for just six free-throw attempts and connected twice.

“We all really like to run the floor together,” explained Byron, who will attend Husson or the University of Maine-Fort Kent in the fall. “We all realized that anyone who wants to run the floor together will work good together. You could have thrown any of us out there and we would have played well together.”

“That’s Class D basketball. That’s how it is. You can throw five guys together and you can do that all the time,” added Ciomei.

Lee Academy’s Tom Bird had 11 points and Houlton High’s Drew Farrar had 10 for the winners. Fort Kent’s Sam Bard had six points and six rebounds, and Madawaska’s Dominique Rossignol had six rebounds and two steals.

For the West, Rangeley’s Dave Jensen had 15 points and four rebounds, while Boothbay Region’s Roy Arsenault and Dirigo of Dixfield’s Michael Holmquist had 10 points apiece.

Traip Academy of Kittery’s Isaiah Plummer corralled a game-high nine rebounds to go with his seven points. Boothbay’s Owen Johnson grabbed six rebounds.

“I didn’t care about scoring or anything. I just wanted to get the opportunity to play with a bunch of good guys and have a good time,” said Jensen. “We had fun out there.”

In the A game, Duncanson wanted to get a little measure of revenge after his Bulldogs were beaten by Bangor High School in the state Class A final.

“It’s a good feeling after losing that game. It felt good to come back and do it in Bangor in a pretty big game. It means a lot, ” said Duncanson, the smallest player in the game at 5-foot-11. “The East keeps winning all the championships, so we were joking around in practice saying we wanted to beat them this time.”

“It was a good team effort. We jelled together pretty quickly,” added the speedy Duncanson, whose explosive first step enabled him to penetrate the paint and create open shots for his mates or generate his own pullup jumper.

“He’s probably one of the quickest, if not the quickest, guard in the state,” said University of Maine-bound East center Sean McNally of Gardiner, who had a game-high seven rebounds. “He’s tough to handle. The best aspect of his game was getting into the paint and then dishing to his big men or dishing out for the outside shot.”

The 6-5 Findlay exhibited a nice touch around the basket and the ability to hit short jumpers.

He scored 10 of his team’s final 19 points, including three straight baskets during an 11-1 run that erased a two-point deficit and gave his team the lead for good at 60-52.

“Findlay finds the gaps real well and he steps out [to get open] when I penetrate,” said Duncanson. “We’ve played together in rec ball and stuff, so we knew each other a little bit.”

Mountain Valley of Rumford’s Andy Shorey had 10 points and six rebounds, Portland High’s Ryan Carmichael finished with seven points and four rebounds, and Lincoln Academy of Newcastle’s Devon Peaslee had eight points.

“We were kind of intimidated at first because they were taller and probably more athletic than we were,” said Shorey. “But we played as a team, had fun, and came out with a win.”

Newly crowned Mr. Basketball Troy Barnies of Edward Little High School in Auburn, Ellsworth’s Corey DeWitt, and Hampden Academy’s Dan McCue had 10 points each for the East, and Barnies also contributed six rebounds. Leavitt of Turner’s Cameron Angell had seven points and four rebounds.

In the free-throw shooting competition, Medomak Valley of Waldoboro’s Zack Durkee won with a perfect 50-of-50 showing.

Barnies won the slam-dunk competition.
