Franco-American Day in Augusta on March 21

AUGUSTA – The sixth annual Franco-American Day will be held at the State House on Wednesday.

The celebration is scheduled during International Francophone Week, celebrated worldwide March 18-24.

Eleven-year-old Melanie Saucier of Fort Kent will sing the U.S. and Canadian national anthems in French and English. If any dignitaries from France are present, she also will sing “La Marseillaise.”

The chorus from L’Ecole Francaise du Maine in Freeport will perform in the rotunda before the session.

Three inductees to the Franco-American Hall of Fame will be recognized in both the House and Senate.

They are Cleo Ouellette of Frenchville, who has spent years promoting French language and culture as a teacher at Wisdom High School in St. Agatha, and as a member of both Le Club Francais and the Maine Acadian Heritage Council; author and professor Norman Beaupre of Biddeford; and former legislator Constance Cote of Lewiston.

The public is invited to attend. For information, contact Ross and Judy Paradis at 728-4854.
