Orono High School

ORONO – Thirty local students will meet March 16-17 at Orono High School for a weekend in Spanish. Called Spanish immersion, the event has been a tradition at the school for the past several years.

The immersion provided an opportunity for aspiring linguists to hone speaking skills and gain mastery in conversation that is hard to attain in the classroom.

While speaking only Spanish, students learned about the cultures of Spanish speaking countries, cooked Spanish food and engaged in creating several crafts.

Spanish teacher Christine Crocker organized the immersion with the help of students completing a community service graduation requirement. This year, Crocker was assisted by Michael Amato of Veazie.

As a special feature of the immersion project, students learned the Argentine tango. Santiago Rave, owner of Thistle’s Restaurant in Bangor, who teaches the traditional dance Monday nights at the restaurant, offered his expertise to the students.

Students from Bangor, Hermon and Lincoln were also to attend the immersion and local AFS Spanish-speaking students took part.

Those interested in learning more about the Spanish immersion project may call Crocker at Orono High School, 866-4916, or Amato at 947-9170, or e-mail amatom43@hotmail.com.
