Three University of Maine students were charged with possession of marijuana in two separate incidents that occurred on campus around 10 p.m. Tuesday.
In the first incident, the smell of marijuana wafting though Penobscot Hall at approximately 9:40 p.m. led public safety officers to the room of Hunter Ludwig, 21, who was given a summons for possession of a usable amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
In the second incident, which took place at 9:55 p.m., two people were seen behind Androscoggin Hall by a public safety officer who stopped the duo and discovered they apparently were smoking marijuana.
Andrew Lohmeyer, 18, was given a summons for possession of a usable amount of marijuana and Douglas Nelson, 19, was given a summons for possession of a usable amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
An Old Town man was summoned Monday night for assault and disorderly conduct after an incident outside an Orono bar.
Arnold Gross, 25, was leaving the Bear Brew Pub when he allegedly punched a man standing outside.
A witness flagged down Orono police Officer Chris Watson, who was nearby in his cruiser, Police Chief Gary Duquette said Tuesday.
Watson saw a man lying on the ground, and people in the parking lot were “yelling and pointing at a small blue vehicle that was heading out toward Pine Street,” Duquette said.
Watson stopped the car before it left the parking lot and questioned Gross, who was the passenger.
“He told me that he had just punched a guy twice in the face outside the Bear Brew Pub,” Watson wrote in his report.
Witnesses said Gross had been inside the bar antagonizing people and making derogatory comments most of the night before a bartender asked him to leave.
They also said the assault was unprovoked, but Gross told police the victim was standing outside smoking a cigarette and elbowed him.
The victim was treated in an ambulance at the scene for a cut on his lip, but refused to be taken to the hospital for further treatment.
Gross is scheduled to appear April 26 in 3rd District Court in Bangor.
Bangor police Officer Ed Potter noticed a Honda driving up State Street hill just after midnight Wednesday without its lights on and attempted to pull it over. The driver reportedly did not stop.
Even with the officer’s blue lights flashing, Thomas Spooner III, 22, who is a transient from New Hampshire, took a right onto Essex Street and another right into a driveway behind Judy’s bar and then jumped from his car and attempted to run, according to the police report.
Potter caught up with Spooner, who smelled of intoxicants according to the report, and placed the man in handcuffs. He was taken to the police station for a field sobriety test and an Intoxilyzer test, but refused to take them. Spooner was arrested for failure to stop for a law enforcement officer and operating under the influence, and was taken to Penobscot County Jail where he remained Wednesday afternoon.
