PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Jessica Ghazali tossed a 3-hit shutout with one walk and one strikeout as the University of Maine softball team beat Saint Peter’s 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the at the Scarlet Knight Tournament.
The Black Bears won two of three this weekend, splitting with tourney host Rutgers Saturday.
Maine’s Kristie Hawkins hit an RBI single that plated Tara Vilardo in the first inning. Vilardo scored in the fifth on a Whitney Spangler double.
Ariana Payan, Samantha Tempe and Meg Papierniak each singled for Saint Peter’s.

Maine splits with Rutgers
At Piscataway, N.J., Saturday, Ashley Waters singled to drive in Kate Joseph in the seventh as the Black Bears earned a 4-3 win over Rutgers in the opening game of a doubleheader, ending Maine’s 6-game losing streak. The Scarlet Knights won the nightcap 7-3.
In the first game, Alexis Souhlaris hit two singles and drove in two runs. Waters finished with two singles and a double while Tara Vilardo singled and homered for the Bears. Brittany Loisel doubled and singled for Rutgers.
In the second game, the Scarlet Knights recorded seven runs, all earned, on 14 hits off Maine’s Jenna Balent. Nicole Lindley of Rutgers singled three times. Maine’s Whitney Spangler hit a two-run homer in the third.

Southern Maine splits
At Fort Myers, Fla., Saturday, Christen Lachapelle knocked in the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth as the Huskies of Gorham earned a 2-1 win over Bethel in the first game at the Gene Cusic Classic. USM lost to Middlebury 9-7 in the second game.
In the first game, USM’s Kristina Grondin scattered four hits to earn the win. Anita Dixon doubled and singled for the Huskies. Laura Naig led the Royals with a triple.
In the second game, the Panthers pounded out 14 hits against Grondin. Lily Hamburger and Allison Bard each drove in three runs for Middlebury. Lachapelle hit two doubles and Megan Stanley had a home run and a double.

At Fort Myers, Fla., Sunday, New Paltz State held off the White Mules in the bottom of the eighth inning to hang on for the win.
Kelly O’Hea recorded the win despite giving up 13 hits to the Mules.
Tory Starr had three hits, including a triple, scored and run and added an RBI for Colby.

Maine splits with NYIT
At Old Westbury, N.Y., Sunday, Billy Cather had a pair of hits as the Black Bears earned a 4-2 in the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Institute of Technology. Maine fell 6-5 in the second game.
In the first game, Cather recorded a double, single and an RBI while Joel Barrett and Brian Hackett each drove in a run for the Black Bears.
Kraig Binick led NYIT with an RBI single.
In the second game, NYIT scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead for good. NYIT’s Tom Murray hit a double and two singles and drove in a run.
Maine’s Danny Menendez smacked a homerun and tallied two RBIs and Kevin McAvoy added a triple.

Bates drops two
At Port Charlotte, Fla., Saturday, the Bobcats dropped a doubleheader to St. Norbert 18-9 and 8-5 to conclude their spring trip with a 1-5 record.
In the first game, St. Norbert scored six runs in the first inning. Brian Mahoney and Alex Egelson led Bates of Lewiston with two singles apiece.
In the second game, Casey McCormack tallied three hits and an RBI for Bates. Brian Buckley notched three hits, including a triple and Denis Hogan added two hits.
Thomas 5, Albright 2
At Chandler, Ariz., Friday, Thomas of Waterville scored four runs in the seventh inning to pull away for the win.
Brian Gardner scattered seven hits for the complete-game victory. Matt Pavlis tallied four singles and an RBI. Michael Chamard added a double and a single for the Terriers.

Saint Joseph’s records sweep
At East Providence, R.I, Saturday, Sam Tupper and Kyle Dorr each recorded a 3-1 win as the Monks took two from Johnson & Wales.
In the first game, Tupper scattered five hits and struck out five. Wade Oliver went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Ben Grant-Roy also had an RBI.
In the second game, the Monks utilized seven sacrifice bunts, including an RBI bunt single by Oliver. Dorr held the Wildcats hitless through 5 2/3 innings and allowed one hit and one run while striking out five in six innings.
Southern Maine 7, Williams 5
At Chandler, Ariz., Sunday, John Mackey had four hits, including a solo homerun to pace Southern Maine past Williams.
Collin Henry hit a two-run homer and Ryan Borque had a solo homer and a double for the Huskies. Jordan Yanni had a two-run double.

Middlebury sweeps Colby
At Phoenix Sunday, Middlebury recorded 24 hits in two games en route to a pair of 12-4 wins at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.
In the first game, Middlebury jumped out to a 7-1 lead by the second inning to put Colby away. Andy Carr had two RBIs to lead the White Mules.
In the second game, Middlebury capitalized on six Colby errors and tallied seven runs in the first inning. Carr notched three hits and John Murphy added two hits. Ryan Conlon finished with two RBIs for Colby.

At Castine, Nate Bolduc and Garrett Lake notched three goals apiece to lead Maine Maritime Academy past Green Mountain.
Like McPartlin added two goals and an assist and Garrett Hutchins had a goal to go along with five assists for the 2-1 Mariners. Patrick Jones had eight saves.
John Magruder scored two goals and tallied an assists for 0-3 Green Mountain. Hale Tomasson recorded 12 saves.
