Spartans knock out Irish Sioux, Eagles move on to Frozen Four

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Chris Mueller and Tim Kennedy scored power-play goals to help Michigan State advance to the Frozen Four with a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday night in the Midwest Regional championship game.

Jeff Lerg made 19 saves for Michigan State (24-13-3). The Spartans advanced to the national semifinals for the 11th time and first since 2001.

Evan Rankin scored for Notre Dame (32-7-3). The Irish, the top seed in the region, lost for only the second time in their last 17 games.

Michigan State will face East Regional winner Maine in the national semifinals on April 5 in St. Louis.

Northeast Regional

BC 4, Miami (Ohio) 0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior forward Joe Rooney scored a pair of goals early in the second period and junior goalie Cory Schneider made 37 saves to lead Boston College to a 4-0 shutout victory over Miami University of Ohio in the Northeast Regional final of the NCAA Division I Northeast Regional hockey tournament Sunday.

Boston College won its 12th straight game and advances to the Frozen Four April 5-7 in St. Louis. It is the team’s second straight trip and third in the last four seasons.

Rooney opened the scoring three minutes into the second period and added a second goal, on the power play, less than three minutes later.

Sophomore forward Kyle Kucharski gave BC a 3-0 lead at 7:26 of the third period.

Sophomore forward Benn Ferriero scored at 11:21, adding to his assist.

Dan Bertram had a pair of assists.

West Regional

North Dakota 3, Minnesota 2

DENVER – Chris Porter’s wraparound goal 9:53 into overtime gave North Dakota a 3-2 victory over Minnesota on Sunday night in the NCAA West Regional championship.

The Fighting Sioux (24-13-5) advanced to their third straight Frozen Four and 17th in school history. North Dakota, a 38-16 in NCAA tournament play, has won seven national titles, the last in 2000.
