Tickets are now on sale for the Zoot Suit Revue, which will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at the Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft.
Sherry French is chairwoman of this fundraiser, and she reports that tickets are $12 and can be purchased at Mr. Paperback, WDME Radio and the Center Theatre, all in Dover-Foxcroft, or at Hudson Avenue Florist and Gift in Guilford.
The dancers, in their brightly colored costumes, will delight you as they perform routines from the 1920s through the 1950s that will please both young and old.
Directed by Chuck and Sue McKay of Back Door Dance Studio in Eddington, the volunteers have been dancing their way around the state to raise money for worthy causes.
This time, they’re helping raise funds to enable residents of Dover-Foxcroft, and visitors to that community, to have a bang-up good time during their 2007 Shiretown Homecoming Festivities, which are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4.
Current plans call for activities on that special day to include a parade, crafters, minishows and fireworks.
The second in a three-part series titled “Addiction: Understanding its Roots and Learning About its Effects” – hosted by Maine Kids-Kin, a program of Family and Children Together of Bangor – will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at FACT, 304B Hancock St., Bangor.
The presentation, “Recovering Hope: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder,” features a video with mothers and families discussing the effects of FASD, how they cope with these effects and their hopes for the future.
The film also includes information presented by researchers and clinicians about evaluations and interventions for those affected by FASD.
Licensed clinical professional counselor Susan Burgess will answer questions during a discussion period after the presentation.
The presentation is free, but registration is required. Child care is available on site by request.
For more information, or to register, call Janelle Wuoristo at (866) 298-0896 or 941-2347.
The final presentation in the series is scheduled for Wednesday, April 25.
Ro LeGasse, director of Caring Connections at the Bangor Y, hopes folks attending the 31st Annual Bangor Y Spring Fair will be sure to support Caring Connection’s gently-used book sale, plant sale, a small silent auction and its Chocolate Cafe.
The fair is 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, March 30; 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, March 31; and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at the Bangor Auditorium and Civic Center.
Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for children ages 1-12, and free for children 11 months and younger. Presale tickets are $2 through Thursday, March 29, at the Bangor Y on Second and Hammond streets.
LeGasse wrote that all proceeds from the Caring Connections booths at the fair “will help many qualified women get their needed breast and cervical health care at no cost to them.”
She said that “no matter what your sweet tooth craves most, you will find it at the Chocolate Cafe,” and you will find hundreds of hardcover and paperback books “at very reasonable prices.”
LeGasse added that the silent auction includes a signed copy of “On Writing” by Bangor author Stephen King.
Caring Connections is a program of the Bangor Y and Eastern Maine Medical Center, offering breast and cervical health services for under-served women in our area.
Janis Hogan, co-chairwoman of Belfast Area High School Project Graduation 2007, reports “all are welcome,” and she urges you to “bring your dancing shoes” for a Chemical-Free Benefit Dance 7 p.m.-midnight, Saturday, March 31, at the Blue Goose on Route 1 in Northport.
Featuring music of the Searsmont Street Band and Avoiding Signals, a group of BAHS students, the dance’s proceeds will benefit preparations for the BAHS chemical-free, post-graduation celebration.
With the recent rain and snowfall making our rivers and streams a little more appealing to paddlers, Erin Rice of the Pine Tree Society reminds you that you can register now for the 2007 Paddle for Pine Tree Camp that offers two trips: Friday, June 1, and Saturday, June 2, on the Kennebec River.
The first is a sunset paddle from Bingham to Solon, followed by dinner next to the river, and the second is a morning paddle from Solon to North Anson, followed by a celebratory barbecue.
Through pledges raised by paddlers, the event helps support Pine Tree Camp, a summer camp for Maine children and young adults who have disabilities.
To register or receive more information, visit the Pine Tree Society Web site at www.pinetreesociety.org, call 443-3341, or e-mail lwohl@pinetreesoeciety.org.
