Gov. John Baldacci has established an executive subcommittee to implement recommendations aimed at protecting the “valued qualities” of coastal Maine.
Earlier this year, the state’s Land and Water Resources Council presented to a legislative committee the results of a two-year study of management practices in coastal and “nearshore” areas.
For purposes of the study, “nearshore” is defined as the waters within three nautical miles of the Maine shoreline.
Among the group’s recommendations for improving management of nearshore areas were:
. More state administrative and financial support for regional initiatives that examine social and ecological issues at the local level and engage local stakeholders.
. Creation and implementation of a long-term coastal marine science plan.
. Implementation of strategic planning across the state and federal agencies involved in nearshore management.
. Improve outreach.
. Identify additional funding for management programs.
The subcommittee created Thursday by Baldacci’s executive order will be responsible for implementing those recommendations, setting annual priorities and goals and recommending changes to state laws and regulations.
“Maine’s economic and ecological health depends on the ocean,” Baldacci said in a statement. “It’s imperative that we consider long-term sustainability and undertake regional approaches to marine and coastal management.”
